New Teacher Degree Apprenticeship for Maths Launching at University of Nottingham

Looking for a career that makes a real difference, pays you to learn, and sets you up for life? If you’re into maths and want a solid route into teaching (and without racking up loads of uni debt!) the University of Nottingham has announced an exciting new opportunity you’ll want to know about.

What’s New?

The University of Nottingham is developing a Teacher Degree Apprenticeship specifically for aspiring secondary maths teachers. It’s part of a new national pilot backed by government funding, and Nottingham is one of only eight universities across the country chosen to deliver it.

The best part? You don’t need an undergraduate degree to apply. This apprenticeship lets you earn while you learn, gain a full degree, and finish with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), all without the traditional uni route.

Who’s It For?

This could be your perfect fit if you:

  • Are a school leaver or recent college graduate wanting a fast-track into a rewarding career
  • Already working but want to reskill or upskill into teaching
  • Love maths and want to share that passion with the next generation
  • Want to earn a salary while you study (yes please 🙌)

To apply for a Teacher Degree Apprenticeship in England, you need to:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have lived in England for the past 3+ years
  • Hold GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in English and Maths (and Science if you want to teach primary)
  • Meet university entry requirements (usually A-levels or equivalent – this varies by provider)

According to the university, apprentices often go on to secure full-time roles in their training schools and are highly valued by employers because they already understand the school’s culture and students.

Why study at the University of Nottingham?

Nottingham’s new Teacher Degree Apprenticeship is being developed by the team behind its top-ranked, Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ education programmes. They’re working hand-in-hand with real schools to make sure apprentices are well-prepared, well-supported, and confident in the classroom.

According to Ruth Eccles, Head of Degree Apprenticeships at the university:

“Our apprenticeships are already supporting skills development in our region’s healthcare settings, so expanding to education feels like a natural and important next step.”

This unique programme is designed to give you a deep understanding of mathematics and how it applies in the real world. You’ll get hands-on teaching skills, including small group work, pastoral care, and classroom management as well as full training to become a qualified teacher, with both university-based study and school placements.

You’ll be learning from experts across both the School of Education and the School of Mathematics, both of which are ranked in the UK top 10 and top 50 globally (QS World Rankings 2024).
